New talk ....
Byron was captivated by mountain scenery, and his travels clearly were the inspiration behind many of his writings. His appetite for new places was never satisfied, and turning his back on mounting scandals and considerable debts, he decided at the age of 21 to embark with his friend, Hobhouse, on a 'Grand Tour'. Sailing from Falmouth to Lisbon, the talk follows Byron from Portugal and Spain to Albania and Greece. It then traces his later journey to Switzerland and the beautiful cities of Italy, interweaving his pilgrimage through the Mediterranean countries with that of Childe Harold, the subject of the poem which made Byron famous, who sets out on a similar journey to seek meaning, purpose and fulfilment.
